Disaster Services responds to events of all types. Last year the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter of the American Red Cross served 1071 disaster victims as part of 220 single family fires and 29 other types of disaster. In December 2008 the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter joined forces with the Palmetto Service Center (formerly the Palmetto Chapter) to ensure Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper Counties continue to receive a high level of service for their community.
In addition to single family home fires, American Red Cross trained volunteers respond to local disasters such as tornado's and hurricanes. They provide shelter, food, and health and mental health services. There is also an opportunity to assist with national disasters such as hurricanes and forest fires. The core of American Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disaster to enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently.
