American Red Cross Asks For You To Become A Hero For Fire Victims

When the majority of individuals think of disasters, they envision the large scale disasters that are seen on TV, such as Hurricanes or Earthquakes. The American Red Cross wants you to know that although “silent disasters”, such as single family house fires, may not receive the same amount of attention, they are much more common and can be just as devastating.

In response to a dramatic increase in the number of fires that have recently occurred in our community, the local chapter of the American Red Cross has launched a new fundraising campaign to ensure that we will be able to continue to assist the victims of these fires during their time of need.

“The Heroes for Fire Victims campaign is a way the community can help its’ neighbors in need by sponsoring a family that has lost everything to a fire,” explained Heroes Campaign Chairman, Mason Holland. Each donation of $1,250 to this campaign will provide desperately needed emergency relief of food, clothing, temporary shelter and other related needs for a family of four right here in the Lowcountry.

During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, your local chapter of the American Red Cross assisted 1,268 fire victims in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties. This was a 44% increase over the previous year. Your local chapter is there 24/7 for the residents of the lowcountry but we need support so please become a Hero for a family that has lost everything to fire.
